Howard Herndon
Each day I awaken with anxiety that our nation is no longer the paradise of the world.
I believe the honorable work of our forefathers to establish a Constitution, which provided guidance for our nation, would have served us better if there were term limits for members of Congress.
I feel that many of the Congress members' decisions are influenced by their desire to spend a lifetime in Washington.
Many of the actions of Congress are influenced by the numerous lobbyists allowed special access to their offices, where they solicit distinct favors. There are now 37,500 registered lobbyists in Washington, which is 70 times the number of congressmen.
Many of these lobbyists earn more than a congressman. And we know that, in benefitting personally in their relationship with a particular lobbyist group, Congress may not act in the best interest of our nation.
For example, congressmen have not acted decisively to stop the influx of illegal immigrants. And they have failed to adequately disallow the existing massive illegal drug trade across the border.
Also, Congress has failed to protect us by allowing a significant imbalance of trade of goods between ourselves and the other world nations. These decisions have contributed to the financial depression that is upon us, causing many to lose jobs and fear the future.
Congressmen, acting more for personal gain in simply holding a seat, override their good legislative judgment and become more interested in protecting their position rather than spending their energy legislating wisely.
Enacting term limits would free them to wisely work on solving our national challenges rather than assuring personal gain by being a lifetime member. Our nation should act soon to limit congressmen to two four-year terms and make lobbyist actions illegal.
