I have been following this issue with some interest. I've watched Chris Matthews dressing down people like G. Gordon Liddy (whom I like quite a bit) and a Republican congressman for daring to ask questions about Obama's birthplace. But all of the blusteirng by the likes of Matthews does not eliminate the obvious question: Why is Obama spending millions of dollars defending the issue instead of simply releasing the long form birth certificate?
There is only one reason I or anyone else can think of why he would choose to continue to fight that issue. The long form birth ceritifcate probably indicates or suggests that Obama was not a naturally born U.S. citizen, and if this is the case, it would wreak unprecedented havoc upon both him and, now unfortunately, the country. Can you imagine? Obama would have defrauded the entire nation to grab its highest office. All the legislation he signed would arguably be invalidated; All the executive orders and the foreign policy initiatives would be imperiled. Not to mention, as Matthews himself opined, Obama could conceivably be incarcerated as an illegal alien. Actually, the more I think about it, the more enticing it sounds...
One extraordinarily disingenous point advanced by Matthews is as follows: He has been hosting a number of so-called "Birthers" on his show for the purpose of ripping into them and trying to humiliate them, and undermining their good faith quest to establish Obama's birthplace.
During these "interviews" he has been holding up a copy of Obama's "Certificate of Live Birth" and claiming, quite superciliously, "HERE IT IS!! HERE IS THE BIRTH CERTICIATE!! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT???" Later on in his schtick, he mentions as another article of proof -- that Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle (a Republican) states that she has seen the actual birth certificate and it establishes that the president was born in Hawaii.
Well... if Governore Lingle saw the REAL birth certificate, what has Matthews been repeatedly touting around as the birth certificate on his show? Liddy tried to explain, but Matthews shouted over him as usual. The Certificate of Live Birth is NOT a birth certificate. It is a document that is electronically generated and is putativley based on the actual birth certificate. It is a derivative document and has less information on it than the real birth certificate. So, if Obama is amenable to releasing the Certificate of Live Birth, why not release the real thing???
Why spend millions and millions of dollars and and permit further suspicion to fester as it has been doing? Did Lingle really see the long form birth certtificate? Who knows? Maybe she thought she did. Then again, maybe Matthews is misrepresenting what she has said. Why should the American people have to take the unchecked word of a state governor on whether or not a sitting U.S. president is actually Constitutionally eligible to hold that office? The bottom line is that no article of proof is as conclusive as the actual long form birth certificate itself.
Of course no one can claim to know whether Obama is a U.S. citizen (I certainly don't), but there is substantial evidence -- circumstantial and otherwise -- circulating out there casting enough doubt on a Constitutional issue such that a formal inquest would be appropriate. The mere fact that Obama continues to resist releasing his long form birth certificate is enough to make any reaosnable person wonder about whether he has defrauded the American people. I can discern no logic behind this position aside from an intent to hide something nefarious.
